The Northwest Territories is a unique region in northern Canada. It is surrounded by the Yukon, Nunavut, and the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. In the north, several islands of the Arctic Archipelago are part of the Northwest Territories, the largest of which are Victoria and Banks Island. The Northwest Territories has a population of approximately 42,000, 40 percent of whom live in the capital, Yellowknife. About half of the population consists of Indigenous peoples. In addition to English and French, nine languages are spoken there, spoken by local Native American tribes and Inuk people.
