Ontario's Highlands

Ontario's Highlands, a premier destination for fly-drive road trips, features the Canadian Shield's most diverse underlying geology and picturesque vistas of land, water, and rocky landscapes that uniquely define the region's rural tourism character, charm, culture, and heritage. The region is distinguished by the Canadian Canoe Route, Wonders of Our Earth, the Maple Sugar Trail, Fall Colour Backroads, Snow Country Fun, Town & Country, La Route Champlain, and the "WILDS" of Ontario's Highlands. The carefully curated collection of authentic experiences, engaging attractions, and boutique accommodations speaks to the heart of Canada with a vision for responsible travel.

Billions of years ago, Ontario's Highlands were a geological landscape with mountains higher than the Himalayas. After four ice ages and major upheavals, Ontario's Highlands were literally left with a treasure trove of attractions – the picturesque Canadian Shield with its abundance of freshwater lakes, rivers flowing through the valleys, mature maple and mixed forests covering the rolling hills, and treasures found on the earth's surface.

Nestled between Ontario's two major urban centers and international gateways, Toronto and Ottawa, Canada's capital, Ontario's Highlands is just 1.5 hours northeast of Toronto, 30 minutes west of Ottawa, and 1 hour north of Kingston. Ontario's Highlands, its county partners, and 18 Ontario provincial parks cover a region three times the size of Algonquin Provincial Park, encompassing the park's eastern, southern, and southwest borders. Highway # 60, the main artery through the northern portion of Ontario's Highlands, easily connects to the park entrance via the East Gate, and Highway # 7 winds along the southern border through the Land Between ecotone, where the Canadian Shield and the St. Lawrence Lowlands meet, providing habitat for some of the greatest biodiversity in Canada.

Ontario's Highlands, a sustainable, active destination known for its fly-drive and RV travel, offers tailor-made adventures in all four seasons, guided by culture and Indigenous people. These adventures showcase quaint towns, artisanal retreats, farm-to-table cuisine, and outdoor music performances, all served with the friendly, warm hospitality of guided or self-guided tours. Visitors can easily venture off the beaten path into the wilderness via canoe, bike, hike, ski, snowshoe, or sled, collect a souvenir "gemstone" from Canada, participate in the making of a maple confection, or simply enjoy the benefits of its natural wonders. The area invites visitors to explore their inner explorer, the small voice within us that tells us to follow our own path and trust ourselves.
